Science on the Trading Floor: Mapping Life Sciences, Biotech & Green Energy Listings on the Indonesia Stock Exchange

2 August 2026 Capital Markets · Bioeconomy

Science does not only live in laboratories — some of it trades. The Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX), whose benchmark is the Jakarta Composite Index (locally, IHSG), lists dozens of companies whose core business rests on the life sciences in the broad sense: pharmaceuticals and hospitals, nanotechnology and engineered seed, renewable energy underpinning the green economy. What follows is a sector map, arranged like a watchlist so it is easy to read and to track.

Where science meets the capital market

For science entrepreneurship, a public exchange is one of the most mature funding nodes available — the point at which a research-based company converts innovation into capital for further growth. It is a natural extension of the argument we set out in The Future of Biofinancing. The list below is grouped into five sub-sectors, from the most established to the newest.

1. Pharmaceuticals & drug manufacturing

The backbone of the healthcare sector on the exchange — from prescription drug makers to herbal medicine producers.

  • KLBF — Kalbe Farma Tbk. Indonesia's largest pharmaceutical producer, spanning prescription drugs, consumer health, nutrition and distribution.
  • KAEF — Kimia Farma Tbk. State-owned pharmaceutical group: medicines, a national pharmacy chain and integrated clinical laboratories.
  • INAF — Indofarma Tbk. State-owned producer of generic medicines, pharmaceutical ingredients and medical devices.
  • DVLA — Darya-Varia Laboratoria Tbk. Prescription and consumer health products; affiliated with United Laboratories of the Philippines.
  • MERK — Merck Tbk. Local subsidiary of the Merck Group; pharmaceuticals and specialty chemicals.
  • PYFA — Pyridam Farma Tbk. Mid-scale producer of generic medicines and medical devices.
  • PEHA — Phapros Tbk. Producer within the state pharmaceutical holding (Bio Farma); generics and herbal medicines.
  • SCPI — Organon Pharma Indonesia Tbk. Subsidiary of Organon, the Merck & Co spin-off; women's health and prescription products.
  • TSPC — Tempo Scan Pacific Tbk. Diversified pharmaceutical and consumer goods group.
  • SOHO — Soho Global Health Tbk. Producer and distributor of pharmaceutical products and supplements.
  • SIDO — Industri Jamu dan Farmasi Sido Muncul Tbk. Indonesia's largest producer of jamu, the country's traditional herbal medicine, and herbal pharmaceuticals.
  • IRRA — Itama Ranoraya Tbk. Distributor of medical devices and diagnostic products.

2. Laboratories & medical devices

  • PRDA — Prodia Widyahusada Tbk. Clinical laboratory services with the largest branch network in Indonesia.
  • DGNS — Diagnos Laboratorium Utama Tbk. Technology-led diagnostic laboratory services.
  • OMED — Jayamas Medica Industri Tbk. Producer of single-use medical supplies such as syringes and medical cotton.
  • MEDS — Hetzer Medical Indonesia Tbk. Supplier of medical equipment and consumables.
  • CARE — Metro Healthcare Indonesia Tbk. Health services and products with a retail pharmacy network.

3. Hospitals & healthcare services

  • SILO — Siloam International Hospitals Tbk. Indonesia's largest private hospital network.
  • MIKA — Mitra Keluarga Karyasehat Tbk. Private hospitals serving the premium urban segment.
  • HEAL — Medikaloka Hermina Tbk. Hospital network with substantial reach beyond Java.
  • SAME — Sarana Meditama Metropolitan Tbk. Operator of Sammarie Hospital.
  • BMHS — Bundamedik Tbk. Hospital and clinic network (Bunda Group), focused on maternal and child health.
  • SRAJ — Sejahteraraya Anugrahjaya Tbk. Operator of Mayapada Hospital.
  • PRIM — Royal Prima Tbk. Private hospital network based in Sumatra.
  • RSGK — Kedoya Adyaraya Tbk. Private hospital offering general and specialist services.
  • MTMH — Murni Sadar Tbk. Private hospital operator in Jakarta.

4. Nanotechnology & applied biotechnology

The sub-sector closest to frontier research — and still the thinnest by number of listings.

  • NANO — Nanotech Indonesia Global Tbk. R&D in nanotechnology and materials engineering; the only pure-play nanotechnology listing on the exchange, serving healthcare, aquaculture, cosmetics and agribusiness.
  • BISI — BISI International Tbk. Agricultural biotechnology: high-yield hybrid seed for maize, rice and horticulture developed through plant genetics research.
  • BTEK — Bumi Teknokultura Unggul Tbk. Agricultural biotechnology across three units — bioplant (tissue culture), bioflora and biomedika.

5. Green energy & renewables

  • BREN — Barito Renewables Energy Tbk. Indonesia's largest renewable energy company and national geothermal market leader (around 38 percent share).
  • PGEO — Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk. The largest geothermal power producer; subsidiary of the state energy company Pertamina.
  • KEEN — Kencana Energi Lestari Tbk. Developer and operator of hydroelectric and other renewable projects.
  • TGRA — Terregra Asia Energy Tbk. Renewable project developer, including geothermal and prospective solar.
  • ARKO — Arkora Hydro Tbk. Independent power producer running run-of-river mini and micro hydro plants.

Notes & context

  • The largest listings by liquidity and market capitalisation in pharmaceuticals are KLBF, KAEF, INAF, SIDO and TSPC.
  • NANO is currently the exchange's only research-driven pure-play nanotechnology listing; BISI and BTEK represent the agricultural biotechnology side.
  • In green energy, exposure on the exchange remains concentrated in geothermal and hydropower — BREN and PGEO are the two large caps. Pure bioenergy plays (biomass, biofuel) have yet to list separately in any number.
  • Etana Biotechnologies Indonesia — a domestic biopharmaceutical and mRNA vaccine producer — is a notable player but remains privately held and has not listed on the IDX as of the most recent data.
  • Smaller listings (hospitals, nanotechnology, recently listed renewables) can trade with low liquidity. Check the listing board — Main, Development, or Special Monitoring — alongside fundamentals before transacting.

Read as a whole, the map shows something encouraging: Indonesia's science ecosystem now has a visible presence in the capital market, from pharmaceutical majors to a first generation of nanotechnology firms. The more research that reaches commercialisation and listing, the stronger the bridge between the laboratory and the wider economy — which is the whole point of science entrepreneurship.
